What to expect from your resume

Resume: A brief account of one's professional or work experience and qualifications, often submitted with an employment application Dictionary.com

Whilst we all know that a resume is an essential tool for job-hunting, it actually has a range of purposes. Understanding these can help us to create resumes that best serve our needs.

From an employer's perspective the resume is a very useful tool. It provides:

  • a history of the applicant
  • a track record of performance
  • a summary of experience in a short, easy to read document
  • information through which to screen out unqualified applicants
  • a tool for interviewing
  • a document for personnel records if the candidate is offered a job

From the job applicant's perspective, the resume has one and only one purpose: to obtain an interview for the applicant.
