Career Times & CityU Hiring Index (CCHI)

What is Career Times & CityU Hiring Index (CCHI)?

The CCHI, compiled by Career Times and the Unit for Chinese Management Development (UCMD), City University of Hong Kong, focuses on trends in hiring and advertising for human resources in Hong Kong's job market. The main purpose of the index is to examine the availability of vacancies in Hong Kong as indicated by the job advertisements published in selected and specialised print media.

What is the value of the CCHI and its auxiliary indices?

  1. Supplement existing statistics and data

  2. By providing information on a more regular basis (i.e. four times a month), the CCHI will help various industries and Government departments to make more timely decisions.

  3. Serve as a reference for job hunting

  4. Our advertisement-size-adjusted CCHI Index (SCCHI) makes it possible to track relative demand for hiring in different industries. Graduates looking for jobs will find these indices helpful for career planning. As trends emerge, they will indicate which sectors are showing steady growth or declining.

  5. Help human resources consultants to offer advice to clients and candidates

  6. The information made available will show the degree of competitiveness for three major types of positions, namely director, manager and non-managerial, and make it easier to understand what their clients may need to do to recruit the manpower they want.

How to interpret CCHI?

  1. The standard CCHI index (CCHI)

  2. The CCHI measures the general hiring trends of the overall job market. If the index goes up, it implies that the number of jobs available is increasing as compared with the base period of 20-26 February 2005.

  3. The advertisement-size-adjusted CCHI index (SCCHI)

  4. This index is a result of CCHI weighted for the different sizes of advertisements placed. If it is above the CCHI, it implies that recruiters are more willing to spend on larger advertisements.

  5. These industry CCHI index (ICCHI) and the advertisement-size-adjusted industry CCHI index (SICCHI)

  6. They are specialised industry CCHI and SCCHI indices with a separate one for each of the 18 different industries.

When will CCHI be published?

The indices are released on the fifth working day following the week in which hiring activities were monitored.
